A Gamified Smart Plant Care App
Bridging IoT, Gamification, and Crypto for an Engaging Plant Care Experience
SAP Heroes is a smart plant care app that combines IoT automation, plant monitoring, and an engaging FarmVille-style game to help users grow and maintain their plants. Players earn SAP tokens through plant care, trading NFTs of in-game plants, and using real-world smart sensors to track their plants’ overall health.
Many people struggle with plant maintenance due to:
✅ Forgetting to water their plants.
✅ Lack of understanding of proper soil, light, and nutrient needs.
✅ Unattractive smart sensors that disrupt home aesthetics.
✅ A lack of incentive or engagement in plant care.
How might we design a solution that makes plant care effortless, engaging, and rewarding?
1️⃣ Smart Plant Monitoring – Connects with sensors that track moisture, light, temperature, and soil nutrients.
2️⃣ Automated Watering System – Controls a smart irrigation valve, with water pulled from the air via Skywell integration.
3️⃣ Gamification – A FarmVille-style game where users earn SAP tokens by successfully growing plants.
4️⃣ NFT Marketplace – Players can mint rare plants and propagation materials as NFTs and trade them.
5️⃣ Customizable Smart Sensors – Decorative figurines hide sensors in plant pots.
6️⃣ Strategic Gameplay & Events – Weekly challenges like the “Rose Bowl” keep players engaged.
To create a frictionless onboarding experience, I mapped out the user journey for adding a new plant:
1️⃣ Choose a Location
Select from 10 common preset locations (e.g., Living Room, Office Desk, Backyard) or enter a custom one.
2️⃣ Set Soil Type
Select from common soil types (Loamy, Sandy, Clay, Peaty, etc.).
3️⃣ Choose Light Conditions
Select from 10 lighting presets (Full Sun, Partial Shade, Grow Light, etc.).
4️⃣ Confirm Irrigation Setup
Connect to an automated watering system or set manual watering reminders.
5️⃣ Select Additional Parameters
Pot Size (Small, Medium, Large).
Humidity Levels (Low, Medium, High).
UX Challenges & Solutions
1️⃣ Challenge: Balancing Gamification with Real Utility
💡 Solution: The core gameplay loop needed to be fun but not distracting from real plant care. I designed an intuitive dual-interface approach:
Real-world Mode: Simple, data-driven UI for plant monitoring.
Game Mode: An immersive nursery management simulation where users could earn, trade, and display plants.
2️⃣ Challenge: Information Overload for New Users
💡 Solution: I implemented a progressive onboarding system that gradually introduces features. First-time users only see essential plant care options, while advanced users unlock deeper customization over time.
3️⃣ Challenge: Designing a Marketable NFT Experience
💡 Solution: To encourage NFT adoption, I created a seamless Mint & Sell flow, allowing users to:
✅ Easily convert in-game propagation materials into NFTs.
✅ Burn NFTs to reclaim in-game resources.
✅ Showcase real-world plants in the in-game showroom as limited-edition NFT plants.
4️⃣ Challenge: Sensor Aesthetics
💡 Solution: Users didn’t want ugly tech in their plant pots. I designed custom decorative figurines that conceal sensors and water tanks, blending seamlessly with home décor.
🔹 Research & Wireframing
I started with hand-drawn wireframes to sketch core flows (see early mockups). These were refined through user interviews with plant owners & casual gamers, revealing a demand for customization and automation.

Nature-Inspired Color Palette 🌿 (Soft greens, browns, and golds for an organic feel).
Smooth, Rounded UI Elements 🏡 (Evokes a sense of warmth and playfulness).
Iconography & Feedback Cues 🌞💧 (Easily conveys plant needs without complex data charts).

I developed interactive prototypes in Figma and conducted A/B testing to refine:
Navigation Clarity: Ensuring users could seamlessly switch between real-world plant monitoring & gamification.
Engagement Metrics: Balancing rewards and incentives without overwhelming users.
